Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve
Share
Baa Atoll, located in the central region of the Maldives archipelago, is globally renowned for its exceptional biodiversity. Spanning over 139,000 hectares, it is situated just north of the Kaashidhoo channel, which separates the northern atoll chain from the central one. This atoll is home to a variety of unique ecosystems, including coral reefs, islands, seagrass beds, and mangroves, all of which contribute to its rich and diverse marine and terrestrial life.
The coral reefs of Baa Atoll are its most significant feature, both in terms of area and biodiversity. These reefs support an impressive array of over 1,200 marine species, including 250 species of stony and soft corals. Notable inhabitants include marine turtles, manta rays, whale sharks, and seabirds, along with a number of endangered species such as the green turtle, hawksbill turtle, Napoleon wrasse, and the tawny nurse shark. The atoll’s coral reefs are considered one of the most biodiverse marine ecosystems in the world.
To safeguard this fragile environment, Baa Atoll has been designated as a protected reserve, which includes nine core areas where all forms of extraction are strictly prohibited. These core areas are of critical ecological importance and are managed under the highest conservation standards. Within these zones, only non-intrusive, non-extractive activities are allowed, and all operations are carefully monitored through strict management systems and codes of conduct. Anchoring is forbidden in these areas unless in the case of an emergency.
Surrounding these core zones are buffer zones, where non-damaging, non-extractive activities are permitted, but still closely regulated. Beyond the buffer zones, transitional areas encompass the entirety of Baa Atoll, where sustainable activities are allowed, with ongoing monitoring to ensure minimal environmental impact.
One of the most remarkable features of Baa Atoll’s biodiversity is Hanifaru Bay, a small yet globally significant marine sanctuary. Located on the atoll’s eastern flank, Hanifaru Bay is famous for hosting one of the largest gatherings of manta rays in the world. During certain times of the year, up to a hundred manta rays can be seen congregating in the bay, drawn by the abundance of plankton brought in by the tidal currents. This awe-inspiring natural spectacle attracts divers, snorkelers, and nature enthusiasts from around the world.
